We had an interest presentation at a BNS meeting several years ago by Fred =
Archibald, if memory serves. He showed that using the same technology that =
has been at use in at a solar power plant built in the 1970s or 1980s that =
one could produce enough power for the continent by covering about 10% of N=
evada.

I'm on my way back from visiting a friend in Windsor Ont. and there are sol=
ar panels as well as wind turbines all over the area, mostly in farm fields=
. From the observation tower at one conservation area near Lake St. Clair I=
counted well over 70 wind turbines, all slowly spinning in the breeze. It =
was quite lovely to look at, from my point of view. What was the province's=
largest solar array (two years ago, that may no longer be the case) is als=
o in Essex County, and is quite impressive as well.

Movements of this type would be far more effective if they were united =
in both what they are for and in what they are against. It is all very well=
to be against use of oil, coal, wood, wind and water but in the real world=
one must chose the lesser of available evils which are, hands down, sun, w=
ood, wind and water.

To paraphrase Shakespere, the fault lies in ourselves, not in the pipes=
, that we are oil pigs.

According to conventional wisdom, one can use wind for only about 30% o=
f need; whereas with planning and enough towers it could satisfy all electr=
ical demand by the simple expedient of pumping water uphill when wind power=
was excessive and using this potential energy for hydro power when wind wa=
s slack.

Due to a failure in Federal leadership, going way back, we have a multi=
tude of unqualified people in tiny communities attempting, on the basis of =
incestuous gossip, to determine local acceptable setback standards when thi=
s should have been an ongoing National Research Council project based on s=
cience, measurement and, if applicable, revision/refinement.

Hello all:

Check out 350.org<http://350.org>. Their online campaigns, grassroots orga=
nizing, and mass public actions are already active in 188 countries.

On May 10th people all across Canada are standing up to defend our communit=
ies from pipelines, dirty energy projects and runaway climate change.

Nature is in peril.

Please share this link and ask your friends and family to join you on May =
10th in Halifax:
