Hi Paul, May 7, 2014
The hairless sheep project to which I made reference was in Laputa =
and, according to Gulliver, they were attempting to breed a sheep =
strain that was entirely without hair.=20
I take extreme offence to your unfounded allegation that CDA staff, =
with initials after their name, were routinely hired based on political =
affiliation. In my view, Naturens traffic should be a cut above such =
smear tactics.
=20
When I got hired in 1967 (?) any hint of political pressure was the =
kiss of death; merit counted and nothing else (with the exception of =
wartime service in the armed forces). And that was, from my point of =
view, a desirable circumstance because my Webster line had been Tories =
from way back as I was also at that time.=20
Patronage appointments started to appear while Mulroney was PM =
although most appointments, and all scientist and technician =
appointments, even then were strictly merit based. =20
And yes, I and those of my retired co-workers who still draw breath =
continue to draw a pension; paid for in advance and then some. A rather =
large chunk of our not especially impressive pay was withheld for =
transfer to the 'pension fund' and this 'grew' at an unimpressive 3.5% =
even when inflation was >5% as I recall. And there was no way to opt =
out. At least twice, if I recall correctly, some financial wizard =
decided this fund was larger than needed and effected a fiscal transfer =
from the fund.=20

Well Dave as to hairless sheep.
It was a good project - the CDA hired lots of folks with lots of =
initials after their name - and of the correct political views. I =
imagion most are still drawing govt pensions as we speak. Needless to =
say they didn't want me. anyway the project had other objects and they =
had some success - the wool fell out of the sheep in the spring so =
shearing was unnecessary - some of the wool anyway.
Unfortunately other more essential pieces fell of as well with the =
result the hairless sheep ended up in Irish stew.
Luckly some sheep farmers found out how to produce better ewes with =
the result that the Govt sheep came a distant second in the eyes of most =
sheep men.
Have a nice spring
Paul

I hope people will consider very carefully before applying such =
pesticides as bug b gon and others to their lawns and gardens. Google =
them and check their toxicity to pollinators and other beneficial =
insects. Surely at least those on this nature living list can be =
leaders, communicators and advocates for dealing with the less than 2% =
of insects considered pests in other ways rather than these incredibly =
poisonous treatments.=20
As for ticks. Tuck your pant legs in your socks, wear bug jackets =
and gloves etc. Washing pesticide soaked clothing introduces these =
chemicals into our water.=20
Pyrethroids have been found to be unaffected by secondary treatment =
systems at municipal wastewater treatment facilities. They appear in the =
effluent, usually at levels lethal to invertebrates.

A minor correction, Jane, permethrin is the
man-made analog of pyrethrin and permethrin is
available in far more insecticides than pyrethrin
(because permethrin has a longer shelf-life, a
longer active period and is cheaper to include in
insecticide formulation).
