Nancy
I've seen various sea ducks on large lakes over the years. Once in Keji a flock of eiders.
Right now they will be migrating and maybe get tired or confused over a lake and set down. Or maybe they need to adapt to fresh water for the summer.
A good observation.
Hope you caught some fish
Paul

While my brother was fishing on Big Mushamush Lake, inland Lun Co, Tuesday (20 May) he saw a male and female Surf Scoter there.

This seems unusual. Surf Scoters do breed on inland lakes but much farther North, I think? My copy of All the Birds of Nova Scotia by McLaren is not with me at the moment so I do not know their status in NS.
