I was wakened in the early hours of this morning by loud strident
shrieking sounds from the top of a tree in the fairly dense undergrowth
not far from my window. On investigating it was impossible for a
flashlight to pick out anything from the tangle of spruce and deciduous
leaves - so I put in some earplugs and went back to bed, trying
unsuccessfully to sleep through the continuing intermittent bouts of
shrieking. In the morning I was able to distinguish what looked like a
mature porcupine high up in the trees. It became silent with the
advancing daylight and eventually disappeared.
I have been used to hearing such sounds in the autumn which I always
associated with mating calls, but now am uncertain about the
significance of what I was hearing and what happens when etc....

Enlightenment welcome!
