Hi Paul and others,

Paul wrote the following concerning the abundance ranking for furbearer har=
vest 2012-2013 table:
"How these figures are arrived at I have no idea."

If you look on the 'Furharvesters Report Form', a form that is turned into =
DNR annually by furharvesters, you'll see in the lower right corner an area=
for the reporting person to estimate how plentiful a species is in the loc=
ations they trap. Essentially, 0=3Dnone and 4=3DVery High (N=3Dno opinion).=
The numbers in the table you refer to are simply averages of these reporte=
d estimates of abundance by furharvesters for each county in NS for each sp=
ecies.

If you look at the numbers for marten and fishers, since that's what the or=
iginal question referred to, you'll see that the furharvesters estimates su=
ggest that province-wide, fishers are basically four times more abundant th=
an marten. In Kings Co., fishers are estimated to be about two and one half=
 times as abundant as marten.

To give this another comparison, beaver are estimated to be about nine time=
s more abundant province-wide than marten. Squirrel are estimated to be the=
most abundant furbearing mammal in the province but only slightly more abu=
ndant than beaver.

The estimates can also be looked at over time. Over the last 25 years the p=
rovince wide estimates for fishers has tripled and over the last 15 years t=
hat of marten has doubled.

Should anyone want to look at the tables, the URL is:
http://novascotia.ca/natr/hunt/abundance-rankings.asp

Thanks to Mike O'Brien who is the DNR Wildlife Manager, Furbearer and Uplan=
d Game Program, for pointing me in the right direction.

All the best,

Lance

Interesting Angus
Abundance Ranking for Furbearer Harvest 2012 - 2013 (two tables) =
gives a figure of 0.29 for marten and 1.13 for fisher. Marten is list=
ed for all counties save 2 and fisher save 1.
How these figures are arrived at I have no idea.
So the odds of an unknown small cat sized weasel favors fisher by a good ma=
rgin. No doubt some will conjure up a cougar from either!
Enjoy the summer
Paul
