                Hi David and All,
A few weeks ago while checking owl boxes with Randy Lauff on Tower Rd=
. Cape North I spotted what I thought was a lovely purple lichen on a dead =
tree branch. Not having much time to check it in detail I snapped a few qui=
ck pics and kept trekking to the next box. later, at home, I was able to ge=
t a pretty solid ID. I call it the purple thread lichen. All the best.

Nancy:
I have frequently admired the orange/yellow
lichens along the coast, but have never tried to figure out what species th=
ey
are.

=20

This morning I did a little searching. I found three interesting sources, =
all suggest
it is Xanthoria, likely X. parietina, but that there are a few
other species in the genus in NS.

=20

Frances Anderson, associate with the NS
Museum, has looked at lichens in several locations in NS. Of interest here=
 is a manuscript: =91Lichens of
West Ironbound Island, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia=92 from October 2009 =
(http://kccns.org/include/docs/west_ironbound_lichens.pdf). It includes a =
description of habitats and
which lichens are associated with each habitat.

=20

Patricia and James Hinds have studied the
lichens of Maine, including Xanthoria, see =91The lichen genus Xanthoria in
Maine.=92 The Maine Naturalist (forerunner of Northeastern Naturlaist) 1(1):
1-16. Yes the very first paper in the
first issue of what is now the Northeastern Naturalist! http://www.jstor.o=
rg/discover/10.2307/3858193?uid=3D3739432&uid=3D2&uid=3D3737720&uid=3D4&sid=
=3D21104360834137

=20

An amazing resource I came across was the
lichen section of the digitalmycology website.=20
http://lichens.digitalmycology.com/macrolichens/Xanthoria.html. Great phot=
os and far more information than I
can comfortably process on a summer Sunday morning.

The color reminds me very much of the Witch's Spit Fungus (Tremella mesente=
rica). Same pigment?

Thanks, Nancy
