Hi, James.

I've seen flickers in BC that were intergrades between Yellow-shafted =
and Red-shafted. They had reddish underwings, but a black moustachial =
stripe. =20

I gather that a variety of colourings is possible, however. The text in =
the 2008 National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern North =
America states:
"Intergrades are regularly seen in the Great Plains. These birds may =
show a mix of head colorations and patterns typical of the two "pure" =
groups, and the color of the wing linings and under tail may approach =
one or the other, or may be an intermediate, salmon color."

Cheers,
Susann Myers

Subject: [NatureNS] Question Re: Northern Flicker (yellow-shafted)

Hi all:
=20
I've had a question about a flicker with the black moustache (a male) =
but missing the red V on the back of the head. I see that in crosses =
between red-shafted and yellow-shafted that the red V on the back of the =
head is not there. In this case does a red moustache show or a black =
one with the cross. Bird books that I've looked at are unclear about =
this. Clarification would be appreciated. =20
=20
Sincerely,
=20
