On Saturday I saw 6 of the Black Skimmers that Alix d'Entremont reported
there earlier. I didn't know Rick was going there too--we just missed
each other! The next day I went up the old highway from Yarmouth to
Brier Island and was looking out for more of them because my views of
them at Pinkey's Point were far too short. What amazing birds--the best
I've seen yet by a significant margin. I did make a quick stop at
Mavilette Beach to see if I could see the ones Richard Stern reported
there but did not see them during my brief visit. I also turned down the
road to Cape St. Mary's just beyond Mavilette Beach to check out the
marsh I could see from highway. I talked to a birder from Quebec who
photographed some the previous day and it would be a better spot to try
and photograph them than the beach park.

I didn't see any rarities on my Brier Island Whale/Bird Watching cruise
but I have to put in a plug for Mariner Cruises and in particular
Captain Peggy because she awesome in her ability to identify birds. I
suspected that from checking out Mariner's website and unless you're a
pelagic expert yourself she is definitely the one you want to go with if
you're in interested in birding as well as the whales. But unfortunately
instead of the variable cloud they were calling for it was overcast so
the pictures are not great but I included many pictures of pelagic
species in my eBird checklist anyway so as to maybe whet some appetites
for getting there. Peggy knows a few birders but said she doesn't see as
many as she used to.

Here is my eBird checklist complete with mediocre pictures of awesome
species. And the whales were awesome too!

Peggy also identified 2 Leach's Storm Petrels early on but I didn't see
them well enough to include them on my life list.
