interesting.=0AMy opinion was they were dug to drain the land and let the m=
arsh grasses grow better to provide winter feed for their livestock. An old=
 man showed me a ditch his father dug to drain a marsh at Farmington. He ha=
d backfilled it with stones that he had dug up. An impressive piece of work=
 and done the job. Probably easier than stumping wooded to grow grass.=0AAm=
