Hi Ian & All, Oct 5, 2014
A) When I first started going there, about 1950, access was by =
walking up a sled road much of which became the current paved road, and =
there were remnants of a house site near the crest of that grassy slope =
set in a fairly large area of run down cultivated land (relatively =
smooth) and run down unbroken pasture land. The cleared area extended in =
some cases (I think) right to the bluff.=20
B) This is a guess, but in a previous life I was a Plant =
Physiologist so it has shades of being an educated guess. I suspect that =
photosynthesis in leaves that were damaged by Arthur has been =
considerably less than normal and photosynthates are necessary for =
anthocyanin production. So the situation would be similar to apples of a =
red apple variety being relatively green when grown in shade.=20
But on the other hand, if phloem translocation of photosynthates =
from damaged leaves was impaired more than photosynthesis then brighter =
reds in the unbrowned portions of damaged leaves would be expected.

Hi all,
I was at Blomidon yesterday and hiked Jodrey/Woodland Trail. It was =
pretty quiet in terms of wildlife. Observations of note included singing =
spring peepers, on the woodland trail near the bridge. I had two =
questions:
A. I was wondering if anyone knows what happened to the stand of =
forest that the Jodrey trail cuts along near the bottom of the large =
grassy field, south of the office. The forest type changes from the =
beech/maple forest to a scrubby mix of alder and raspberry with a few =
scattered birch. For interests sake does anyone know what caused the =
disturbance? I am thinking spruce beetle, or maybe a wind storm. If =
anyone could shed some light on this it'd be greatly appreciated.
B. The fall colours were less remarkable than I would have expected. =
Keeping in mind it's early for the heavy colours, I would have expected =
more. Much of the maples on the southern slope of the Jodrey trail =
showed signs of browning, likely from PTS Arthur. How will this damage =
affect anthocyanin production?
Thank you,
IM
