Hi Pat & All, Nov 21, 2014
Fortunately there is no law which says one must do this or face =
consequences but as Marg pointed out (and I forgot to mention) the tree =
gives birds shelter for the remainder of the winter. Some yards have =
lots of shelter but our yard is relatively open so the tree does double =
duty.=20
Festivals in general likely came into being to add some cheer to an =
otherwise dreary and care-worn life. Go back a few generations and =
paraffin candles or kerosene would have been considered huge advances =
over smoky tallow candles or the faint glow from smoky fat-soaked reeds. =
A few more generations back and all heating was by fireplace in which =
almost all heat that was generated by fuel went up the chimney; 2nd =
floor rooms being heated by warmth from the bare chimney. So those long, =
dark cold nights of winter must have been tough and and the promise of =
more light per day, even with more cold for some months, would have been =
in itself a source of comfort; a corner turned.
The celebration of Christmas started as a way to mark the rebirth of =
the sun on Dec 25 in the Persian Mithraic religion and other related =
eastern religions (Frazer; Golden Bough) complete with a Virgin birth =
and images of an infant representing the new sun. As survival of =
Christianity sputterd near the end of the third century some clerics =
made the astute move of shifting the celebration of Christ's birth from =
January 6 to Dec. 25.=20
Why Christmas trees came to be is an interesting question. From =
purely personal experience I suspect the tradition gradually developed =
from the Northern practice of banking houses in preparation for winter, =
the final step being laying several layers of Fir boughs over the earth =
bank that sealed chinks near the foundation. The branches trapped =
blowing snow so the foundation was snug in a wrap of snow over earth. =
Fir was used partly because the smell is agreeable, there are bound to =
be some surplus boughs so the idea of hanging some of the surplus =
indoors would be almost inevitable. A pure guess on my part and perhaps =
entirely incorrect.

the Xmas tree"
I haven't had a tree in the house for more than seven years. I don't =
see the point in growing trees to just to cut them down, use them for a =
week or two, and then throw them out.=20
You can use my name, etc. if you like.
