Hi Everyone,
About 15 years ago the Emerald Ash Borer, an insect of east Asia, entered i=
nto the Michigan fauna via wood from packing material. Since that time it h=
as spread as far away as eastern Ontario resulting in widespread ash tree m=
ortality. While I don't believe the Emerald Ash Borer has yet reached Nova =
Scotia, other invasive insect species certainly have.
A recent article published in the Journal Forest Ecology and Management sug=
gests that native bark-foraging predators such as woodpeckers and nuthatche=
s responding to the new food source the Emerald Ash Borer represents may pr=
ovide some population control on the invasive insect.
They further suggest that management for these foragers (e.g. maintaining s=
nags as nesting sites) may enhance the foraging species' populations and he=
nce increase their ability to control the pest insects.
The authors incorporated 'citizen science' as part of their methodology.
