Fred has raised a great point about the names of species and subspecies. =
A good case in point is the =E2=80=9CMyrtle Warbler=E2=80=9D, which is =
a name I and many others still use a lot, even though the species name =
is now =E2=80=9CYellow-rumped Warbler=E2=80=9D. For the flickers, Fred =
is correct that the name =E2=80=9CYellow-shafted Flicker=E2=80=9D here =
in the east is much more informative than =E2=80=9CNorthern Flicker=E2=80=9D=
, which also includes the far-western Red-shafted and =E2=80=9Chybrid=E2=80=
=9D flickers.

And to Dave, nothing about you is =E2=80=9Cold=E2=80=9D except those =
dated reference-books. The Internet is much less dated but always =
suspicious regarding factual content.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.

> Responding to Dave & Joanne (hi, Joanne): I=E2=80=99m pretty sure that =
our flickers, including the western ones, are still called Northern =
Flickers, the two Canadian species having been lumped into one long ago. =
Most of them still sensibly migrate southward in winter. But thanks to =
climate change and perhaps the birds getting tougher in withstanding =
wintry conditions, over the years more and more of them are either =
migrating not as far south, or are just lingering in one area for the =
whole year (we need marked or banded or transmitter birds to find out =
such things), so that our numbers of overwintering flickers have grown =
over the past 20 or more years. They feed a lot on the ground in all =
seasons, apparently favouring ants when they can be gotten (or their =
pupae).
