Hi All,
We recently had wind chills of -23 C. This account from Norway =
reports fish flash frozen when air temperature was -7.8 C.
http://www.businessinsider.com/thousands-of-fish-freeze-in-norway-bay-201=
4-1
I suspect that a sudden chill, caused by swimming into very cold =
water, can slow metabolism to near zero, leading to loss of mobility, =
and those which wash ashore then really do freeze; a fish version of =
hypothermia.
Some 15 to 20 years ago I received a complementary copy of some =
Outdoors magazine which contained an article about frozen fish washing =
ashore in large numbers on several beaches in Newfoundland. So I had a =
good laugh but now see that this may not have been a joke article after =
all.=20

I think Fritz "Chilled to Death" would be more accurate description=20
rather than "Froze to Death" . People often say "I'm froze to Death"=20
but they are still walking. Anyone froze to death will not say so!=20
A couple of years ago Striped Bass in Pictou Harbour chilled to death=20
and if I remember it had something to do with the discharge from the =
Power Plant.=20
In the good old days when we would fish trout or smelts through the =
ice=20
and took the catch home to eat, they would come to life in the warm =
water in the sink.=20
That was fresh fish!=20
Enjoy the winter=20

Hi All,=20
I don't have any more knowledge than the person interviewed in =
the CBP article but the idea that the mackerel froze to death seems a =
bit strange to me. Winter's onset this year has been about average to =
date, so far as I can tell. Also it's a big lake; there should be parts =
where they could swim to that would be warmer? Why is it only mackerel =
that died? Wouldn't other species freeze to death if that was indeed the =
cause of death? Are there any other instances of this happening (fish =
freezing to death), in the Bras-dOr-Lakes or any large open bodies of =
water in the Maritimes? All the best.=20
