 Hello All,

Reading the sad news about the demise of the Eurasian Kestrel, brings into focus, the overall struggle of all our wildlife. It has been a difficult winter, for them all, especially these last 2 & a half months.
As I live in the city core of downtown Dartmouth, all I can do is get down to my backyard feeders & keep them filled.
Interestingly, I have seen very few Sharp-shinned Hawks hanging around this winter at all, nor have I seen mounds of feathers from a kill.
I have quite a few Song Sparrows, a couple of White-throated Sparrows, lots of BC Chickadees, 5 Northern Cardinals (1 male, 4 females), occasionally Am. Goldfinch, quite a few Hairy Woodpeckers, some Downey Woodpeckers, at least 3 White-breasted Nuthatches.
My neighbour, 2 houses up had some Redpolls recently, but I never saw them here.
We now have a mature, male, Ring-necked Pheasant, living up in the green belt, behind our house, currently coming to my feeders, daily, to scratch away under the sunflower feeders, for the last couple of weeks. Been doing my best, to keep them all filled & spreading the seeds on the snow covered ground. The snow is currently, almost, up to my waist in my backyard.
A small offering, but the best I can do.
Precipitation coming down right now @ 8:30 PM. Already feels like freezing rain.

Stay safe, everyone!

Sincerely,

Gayle MacLean
