Randy:

Cape Breton University has a copy of Beetles of Northeastern North America.

The newer:
Arnett, R.H., Jr., and M.C. Thomas. (eds.). 2000. AMERICAN BEETLES. Volume
1. Archostemmata, Myxophaga, Adephaga, Polyphaga: Staphyliniformia. CRC
Press LLC, Boca Raton, FL. xvi + 443 pp.

is more widely available and has keys to genus. For many groups it is best
to consult the original keys to species.

Downie and Arnett includes keys to species. Most are directly from the
original keys and may be somewhat dated.

Among the major groups of aquatic beetles, the Dytiscidae are well covered
in Larson, Alarie and Roughley 2000: Predaceous diving beetles (Coleoptera:
Dytiscidae) of the Nearctic Region, with emphasis on the fauna of Canada
and Alaska.
