There is no dead water up here and all streams on the eastern=C2=A0side of
Musquodoboit Valley are fine with trout as there are no bass or
pickerel. Lake Egmont got polluted with bass and then pickerel as it
flows north into the Shubie river. I live on the spine of NS, Egmont
is=C2=A01/2 km=C2=A0away and Cooks Lake is within sight that flows to the
Musqy. No problem with Cooks lake. The lakes are side by side but flow
to different sides of Nova.
=C2=A0
The blame lies squarely onto foreign species. We have gypsum and
limestone which keep the waters sweet. Egmont is fed from Cranberry
lake and Scot lake and two other brook/lake systems.
=C2=A0
If the Bass and pickerel jump the spine or are put into the Eastern
shore / Musquodoboit =C2=A0watershed, =C2=A0we will be totally screwed.
=C2=A0
It is that simple, no need to over examine the situation or tint the
truth. We do not have acid rain=C2=A0to the extent=C2=A0as the South Shore,=

mainly from all our limestone but even without it our lakes have a
healthy trout population, if not infested with bass or pickerel that is.
=C2=A0
All the best,
Darrell

=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Over the last 65 years just about all of the formerly hi=
ghly
productive Trout streams in Kings County have become dead water.
=C2=A0
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Streamflow=C2=A0instability, siltation from careless hig=

widening, erosion from extensive clearcuts or cultivated
land,=C2=A0abnormal nutrient influx=C2=A0and acid rain are probable
contributing factors, depending upon the settiing and there may be
other unsuspected causes but in the complete absence of Bass, now or
previously, they are excluded.
=C2=A0
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 If this kind of disaster can happen in the absence of Ba=
ss
it=C2=A0could be=C2=A0rushing to judgment to blame Bass where they=C2=A0are=

present. They are tolerant of warm, sluggish water (low O2 I suspect)
so would be expected to survive where Trout do not.
=C2=A0
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 I don't know Lake Egmont but I notice there are roads al=
ong
three sides and one of these is just along the eastern side. The
topography suggests water fed in from swamp brooks as opposed to spring
fed so I wonder how ir fares in dry periods.
=C2=A0
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 When we first had a cottage at Sunken Lake in 1971 the w=
alls and
windows were shingled with swarms of insects when lights were on at
night and the shallows in season had mob of Penny Toads and schools of
Minnows. By 1995 insects, Toads=C2=A0and Minnows=C2=A0were very sparse.
=C2=A0
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 In all questions it is far better to iterate to=C2=A0the=

to identify a possibly innocent culprit.

Smallmouth basically wipe out trout, has happened in Lake Egmont and
other lakes=C2=A0coming off the Shubenacadie River. Lake Egmont used to be
flourshing in trout, not since tha bass entered. The the Pickerel
entered about 4 years later than the smallmouthand that is all she
wrote.
=C2=A0
The only trout now are on our eastern shore watersheds and they are in
danger I hear from smallmouth, sad indeed.

=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 I think the reputation of Small-mouth Bass has been sull=

after I joined, for proof that they were harmful and received only
fluff.
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 They flourish where Trout can not survive, are fun to ca=

when skinned and filletted, are good eating. I have never encountered
Bass in likely Trout water. In marginal water large Bass may eat small
Trout but I would suppose that large Trout would do likewise.

Have never heard of any goldfish or carp down Yarmouth way.=C2=A0 A former
German was interested in growing carp for the European market 35-odd
years ago. I expressed grave doubt that he could get the permits.=C2=A0
Don=E2=80=99t think anything happened.

Will try to remember to pass along any news on this and will keep ears open=

At the Museum, we have been trying to determine the distribution of
goldfish within the Province.

We would appreciate any geo-reference reports on their occurrence .=C2=A0=
