Come on out to New Glasgow tonight June 2 to learn more on two of Nova =
Scotia's Endangered Bird species (per NS Endangered Species Act). The =
main focus will be on the Chimney Swift, an aerial insectivore which =
annually returns north from over-wintering in the Amazon basin. Why =
here? There happens to be a large night time roost in New Glasgow at =
the former Temperance St. School, 334 Temperance St.

First part of the evening will begin at 6:30 pm at the New Glasgow =
Public Library, 182 Dalhousie St. Ally Manthorne from Bird Studies =
Canada's Maritimes SwiftWatch will be on hand to talk about Chimney =
Swift biology, why these birds are disappearing and what we can do to =
help. Ken McKenna will talk briefly on a workshop held last summer in =
East Dollhousie, Kings, where swift nests were observed in a number of =
barns in the area and to give some tips on what to look for in your area =
to determine if swifts are nesting in old barns and like structures in =
your local area. Nicole MacDonald will give a short presentation on =
results thus far this spring on nesting Piping Plovers in Northern NS. =
Nicole is Coastal Stewardship Biologist from Bird Studies Canada and is =
working with Northern NS Piping Plovers. Dave Currie, president of the =
NS Bird Society will also be present as well as Bruce Stevens who will =
have copies of the NS Bird Society Photo Annual, an album featuring =
photos of 30 NS birders. This would make a nice gift and Bruce will be =
selling these for $15.00.=20

After the talks and providing fine weather, we will move to the Chimney =
Swift roost site at the former Temperance St. school, 334 Temperance St. =
to observe the swifts gather and manoeuvre around the chimney ending =
with the spectacle of them entering the chimney for the night. Please =
note a rainy day may modify the time the birds go in, but on a fine =
night this should occur at 9 pm give or take 15-20 min before or after. =
Please note, the forecast is not looking great for tonight for this =
aspect of the evening but one never knows for sure. Given the cold =
temperature if birds are flying at all this afternoon they will likely =
go in quite early and entry time may be difficult to predict. At last =
night's final spring SwiftWatch (June 1) with 9C temperature, most of =
the 265 Chimney Swifts counted went in at 20:40 but it was not raining =
at the time. If the weather is poor, we may remain at the library after =
the talks to mingle with refreshments supplied by the NS Bird Society. =
Come on out and show your support as we work to increase awareness of =
this roost chimney with the closure of the building as a school and its =
transfer to another use. There will be plenty to entertain and there =
won't be weather for gardening or any hockey games to distract!
