     <span style=3D"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">Come on out to N=
ew Glasgow&#160;tonight June 2 to learn more on two of&#160;Nova Scotia&#39=
;s&#160;Endangered Bird species (per NS Endangered Species Act). The main f=
ocus will be on the Chimney Swift, an&#160;aerial insectivore which annuall=
y returns north from over-wintering in the Amazon basin. Why here?&#160;&#1=
60;There happens to be a large&#160;night time roost in New Glasgow at the&=
#160;former Temperance St. School, 334 Temperance St.</span>

     <span style=3D"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">First part of th=
e evening will begin at <strong>6:30 pm</strong> at the <strong>New Glasgow=
&#160;Public Library</strong>, 182 Dalhousie St.<strong>&#160; Ally Manthor=
ne</strong>&#160;from Bird Studies Canada&#39;s&#160;<strong>Maritimes Swif=
tWatch</strong>&#160;&#160;will&#160;be on hand to talk about Chimney Swift=
biology, why these birds are disappearing and what we can do to help. Ken =
McKenna will talk briefly on a workshop held last summer in East Dollhousie=
, <em>Kings</em>,&#160;where swift nests were observed in a number of barns=
in the area and to give some tips on what to look for in your area to dete=
rmine if swifts are nesting in old barns and like structures in your local =
area. <strong>Nicole MacDonald</strong> will give a short presentation on r=
esults thus far this spring on nesting <strong>Piping Plovers in Northern N=
S. </strong>&#160;Nicole is Coastal Stewardship Biologist &#160;from Bird S=
tudies Canada and is working with Northern NS Piping Plovers. Dave Currie, =
president of the NS Bird Society will also be present as well as Bruce Stev=
ens who will have copies of the NS Bird Society Photo Annual, an album feat=
uring photos of 30 NS birders. This would make a nice gift and Bruce will b=
e selling these for $15.00.&#160;</span>

    </div>=20
    <div>
     <span style=3D"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">After the talks =
and providing fine weather, we will move to the&#160;Chimney Swift roost si=
te at the former Temperance St. school, 334 Temperance St.&#160;to observe =
the swifts gather and manoeuvre around the chimney ending with the spectacl=
e of them entering the chimney for the night. Please note a rainy day may m=
odify the time the birds go in, but on a fine night this should occur at 9 =
pm give or take 15-20 min before or after.&#160; <strong>Please note</stron=
g>, the forecast is not looking great for tonight for this aspect of the ev=
ening but one never knows for sure. Given the cold temperature if birds are=
flying at all this afternoon they will likely go in quite early and entry =
time&#160;may be difficult to predict. <strong>At last night&#39;s final sp=
ring SwiftWatch (June 1) with&#160;9C temperature,&#160;most&#160;of the 26=
5 Chimney Swifts</strong> counted&#160;went in at<strong> 20:40</strong> bu=
t it was not raining at the time. If the weather is poor, we may remain at =
the library&#160;after the talks to mingle with refreshments supplied by th=
e NS Bird Society. <strong>Come on out and show your support as we work to =
increase awareness of this roost chimney with the closure of the building a=
s a school and its transfer to another</strong> <strong>use.</strong> <stro=
ng>There will be plenty&#160;to entertain and there won&#39;t be weather fo=
r gardening or any hockey games to distract!</strong></span>
