It was not a NSBS field trip. It was part of the Festival of Nature (http:/=
/www.naturenb.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/FON_2015_web.pdf) and was trip =
number 37 in the list.

The walk was along the grassy/shubby divider between the two large bodies o=
f water. Lots of red-winged blackbirds. We had a pair of swamp sparrows, ye=
llow warblers, Canada geese, mallards, a pair of greater scaup, ring-necked=
ducks, several American widgeons, lots of soras (calling, but we didn't se=
e any), pied-billed grebe, a female harrier, and bald eagle and a few tree =
swallows. We also had a pair of ducks with the female on the nest, but can'=
t recall the species from memory. The main reason we went there was to see =
black terns and we saw about 5-6 but you can't see them from the parking lo=
t as they tend to stay further out. We saw one other bittern (flying low at=
a distance once we reached the "end" of the trip along the "dyke" (where t=
here is some elephant grass)).

Hi Pat

When did you have the field trip at Amherst? I didn't see any information=
about it anywhere?? Would like to know what birds were sighted, etc as I =
am planning to visit it real soon. Thanks

Chris:

Is this the East Amherst Marsh? If so, what time did you get there? I lead =
a birding trip Sunday morning for the NatureNS/NatureNB AGM event and we ha=
d great views of a pair of bitterns right at the last parking area just as =
we were leaving. I wonder if what you heard was more of a "keeping in touch=
" call rather that a "this is my territory" call=85

Hi everyone,

Today I was at the Amherst Marsh. On two occasions I heard a one syllable=
sound coming from the marsh that sounded like =93Oong-K"

The American Bittern is known for making an =93Oong-KA-chunk=94 sound. Wh=
at I heard sounded like just the first syllable as I said which sounded lik=
e =93Oong-K=94 The tone sounded like a Bittern from the one syllable. I=
=92m aware of what a bull frog sounds like
and it wasn=92t a bull frog.

Question : Do American Bitterns do a single =93Oong-K=94 sound? I want t=
o know the answer before I enter these two American Bitterns on E-bird.
