Sand Barrens are one of the most rapidly changing, disappearing and =
endangered ecosystems in Nova Scotia. =E2=80=9CAs recently as the 1960=
s mile after mile of the Evangeline Trail was surrounded by extensive open =
heathlands with scattered Red Pines. In presettlement times the actual=
area of heathland is believed to have encompassed an area of approximately=
200 square kilometres. Today it appears that less than 3% of the original =
heathland remains=E2=80=9D (Catling et al. 2004:

.pdf">http://www.cba-abc.ca/bulletin/vol_37_1.pdf</a>). The Kingston Sand B=
arrens are home to a number of the Province=E2=80=99s plant and animal Spec=

NS), Wood Turtle (Threatened in NS), and Vesper Sparrow (rare in NS). Ruth =
