Fulton Lavender and I been loosely planning on a very early morning trip to
check out some Amherst marshes at night for some time and we finally gave it
a shot the night before. But while we had a good day birding the marshes
after the sun came up, the night birding was a bust. This year is probably
not the best for it considering the late spring and temperate summer so far.

But we did see a few nice birds such as a Stilt Sandpiper, mostly still in
alternate plumage. It was at the Amherst Waste Water Treatment ponds
yesterday afternoon.

There were also lots of other shorebirds there. 500 Semipalmated Sandpiper.
120+ Lesser Yellowlegs and smaller numbers of Least Sandpiper, Spotted
Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitcher and Killdeer. We also observed 60+ Gadwall
including a few fledglings that unfortunately flushed far easier than I
anticipated. All the shorebirds were still there when we left.
