Pat McKay and I counted shorebirds along the Cole Harbour Saltmarsh =
Trail on Saturday, July 18 from the Bissett Road parking lot to the =
Ready-Aye-Ready bridge, approximately a 3-km distance. We left the =
parking lot at about 2:30 and arrived at the first views of the =
saltmarsh at 2:40. Low tide for Halifax was at 5 p.m. This site has a =
delayed low tide, because of restricted drainage. I find that counting =
on the falling tide works well, leaving the Bissett Road parking lot =
roughly 2.5 hours before the low tide forecasted for Halifax.

We counted the following:

Black-bellied Plover 1, 1st year
Semipalmated Plover 9
Greater Yellowlegs 24
Willet 51
Lesser Yellowlegs 8
Semipalmated Sandpiper 13
Least Sandpiper 2
Short-billed Dowitcher 679

This is a usual count for dowitchers at this site in mid-July. The peak =
count is typically recorded in the coming week. Historic high counts, =
by Ulli Hoeger, surveying by bicycle and therefore including areas =
beyond the Ready-Aye-Ready bridge, were:

July 22, 2007 3500 to 4000
July 25, 2009 2000 to 2500

The coming week would be a terrific time to get out and count shorebirds =
at this site, with seasonal high counts expected for Willet and =
Short-Billed Dowitcher. Later in the season, it is also a great site for =
Hudsonian Godwits, Pectoral Sandpipers and other shorebirds, including =
rarities.

Cheers,
Susann Myers
