Hi Patrick & All, July 21, 2015
Donna's article is a reminder that someone should set up data =
loggers in three or more barns currently used by Swifts to gather =
information on temperatures required/tolerated during the nesting season =
for successful outcomes.
After the barns or the swifts have vanished no amount of hand =
wringing
or counting at communal roosts will restore this opportunity to lay the =
foundation for construction of artificial nesting sites.=20
And it is abundantly clear to me that suitable artificial nesting =
sites would be used if made available. Because barn lofts are artificial =
nesting sites and are used. QED.
If more residential yards were insect friendly; open compost piles, =
disposal of 'yard waste' on site, no broadcast pesticides or bug zappers =
(and the like), most mowing after lawn weed bloom has passed [as I have =
practiced for 48 years] then I expect the skies over residential areas =
would be more Swift and Nighthawk friendly.

Subject: [NatureNS] Swift Night Out III: Sunday, July 26
Sunday, July 26, 2015 =96 Swift Night Out III. 6:45-9:15 pm. =20
Our third, annual Chimney Swift celebration during Wolfville=92s Mud =
Creek Days. Unlike previous years, this year all events will take place =
outside the Robie Tufts Nature Centre in downtown Wolfville. We will =
hold outdoor presentations and some interactive events for kids (which =
might include an endangered species obstacle course and face painting). =
At 8:10 we will begin the official count of our provincially-Endangered =
Chimney Swifts as they circle the skies and spectacularly plummet into =
the chimney for their nightly roost. For final details closer to the =
event, see www.blomidonnaturalists.ca/swiftNightOut. This is a joint =
event between the Maritimes Swiftwatch program of Bird Studies Canada =
and the Blomidon Naturalists Society.=20
