An excellent argument for the importance of citizen science.

On the positive side, the academic folks get it a lot better now than they =
did back in the =E2=80=9850=E2=80=99s and =E2=80=9860=E2=80=99s, when my fa=
ther, a Port Technician for Fisheries Research Board, would come home furio=
us from annual workshops. He would go in with loads of real world observat=
ions, which he was eager to share. All too often, they got dismissed becau=
se they did not fit in with conventional =E2=80=9Cwisdom.=E2=80=9D

Some things DO improve over time!

The demise of the small farms John.

No more small herds of cattle and a few work horses.

Them and swallows were always around the cattle. The swallows

went to a warm spot in the winter, the sparrows went in the barn

with the cattle to stay alive in the cold days, Most farmers liked

them in the winter - not so much in the summers when they took over swallow=
 nests.

Not many of the Ivory Tower birders around small farms either so

they probably missed that!

Enjoy the summer

Paul

The house sparrow saga is an interesting one. A couple of decades ago, ma=
ny of us saw them as exotic invasives, but in more recent years, they have =
become local and somewhat noteworthy.

Does anyone know what happened?

We had a House Sparrow feeding 3 fledged young yesterday. She would fly to=
the black-oil sunflower feeder and then back to feed them. She must have =
been cracking the seeds for them.

A Ruby-throated Hummingbird chased a Black-capped Chickadee around. They w=
eren't near the hummingbird feeder so I don't know what that was about.
