I found this Northern Flicker feather on the road yesterday morning. I had never come across one with such a startlingly yellow shaft before. It puts my DeWalt drill to shame:

I wonder if/how shaft colour varies where the Western (red-shafted) and Eastern (yellow-shafted) Northern Flickers interbreed, presumably in the prairie provinces. Anyone know?
