Probably small mackerel or squid Keith. Both are plentiful this year.

=20

Or maybe herring or silversides. Who knows?

=20

but they do come in where the water is shallow - at East Point on PEI

=20

it is quite a specular display.

=20

Probably easier to catch dinner in shallow water!

Enjoy the summer

I don't know if it was out of the ordinary or not but last Sunday =
I was seeing gannets fairly close at Cherry Hill Beach, Broadcove. At one p=
oint I observed 8 of them in a bit of a feeding frenzy in a 100 meter area =
not far offshore. Two adults and 6 immature in that frenzy.
=20
I should have tried to determine what if anything they were gett=
ing but I didn't. If they were getting something, the prey must have be=
en fairly small or I would have noticed it.
=20
Last fall hundreds of gannet seem to be doing okay fishing fairl=
y close off Hartlen Point, Duncan's Cove, Sandy Cove Rd because they we=
re actively continuing that behavior for a couple of months but so far this=
year I've only seen a few at a time around HRM

Since at least August 9th there have been a number of Northern Gannets=
very close to shore in the Pubnico Area. I was watching them go into Pubni=
co Harbour, then make a turn and head back out towards sea. They were also =
passing near shore from Pubnico Point all the way north until Abb=
otts Harbour Wharf. Ervin Olsen saw one land in the water off of Cook's=
Beach near Pinkney's Point recently. Frank Gummett also mentioned to m=
e that he had four in Halifax Harbour on August 11.=20

the Maritimes.
I can assume that the near shore sightings of gannets must =
be food related. Is there more food near shore than usual, or is there less=
food offshore? I was scoping around where I was seeing the ganne=
ts and didn't see any other species that are typically farthe=
r offshore.

Has anyone else noticed this?
