For the past ten years or so, down on our Wyman Road stamping grounds south
of Yarmouth, the call or song of the veery had become, let's say, not
unusual.

Have heard none this year, but whilst surveying water quality on Agard Lake
(just downstream from Ellenwood) last Thursday at mid-day, I heard the
distinctive, two-tone downturned call of said birdie.

In the midst of all our running about on back country lakes this summer, the
only place I heard red-breasted nuthatches was at the northern end of
Gilfillan Lake, east of Quinan.

Things are changing, I guess.

Another sighting worth mentioning might be what we saw last Monday morning
perched around the shores of Hourglass Lake, Digby County: at least six
bald eagles. My summer student guessed eight, and he is probably right.
