Fellow Naturalists=2C

This is especially for those on the NatureNS list who live in or near the V=
alley and might be interested in joining the 48th annual Kingston XBC=2C bu=
t were not on our mailing list from past years. We always welcome good=2C =
reliable observers who can help cover areas=2C usually on foot or by car. =
Normally field parties consist of 2-4 observers=2C and new observers are pu=
t with more experienced ones. Of course=2C anyone wanting to take part sho=
uld contact me as soon as possible=2C so that you can be added to a team wh=
ere needed most. Note that our count date is only 8 days away - Dec. 21.
=20
As well as helping with field parties=2C we are looking for more feeder obs=
ervers who live within the count circle (12km-radius=2C centred on Kingston=
=2C extending from Lower Middleton to Aylesford east=2C and from Margaretsv=
ille through Harmony). While all-day observation is ideal=2C observations =
as short as one-half hour can be important=2C especially if you have feeder=
s behind the house or where they can not be seen by the field party. The s=
ame applies if you have a view of a pond=2C marsh=2C stream=2C part of the =
coast=2C a feedlot=2C or a crop of cones or fruits being used by birds not =
easily accessible to the field observers. The field parties all have too m=
uch area to cover in a single day=2C and so could spent only a few minutes=
there if it was visible from the road. Of course=2C even if you are home =
all day=2C your observation will not likely be constant=2C and that time an=
d intensity would be included in the report. If you have youngsters=2C the=
y can be great at watching while you are doing something else=2C and callin=
g you when birds show up. Make sure their names get into the observer list=
! Again=2C if you want to observe=2C let me know as soon as possible=2C so=
that we can avoid duplication of counts.
=20
For everyone in the circle=2C if you have an uncommon species around=2C or =
one that you cannot identify=2C please let me know as soon as you can=2C so=
that I can notify the appropriate field party=2C or help with the i.d. Th=
is applies not only to rarities that would regularly get reported here=2C b=
ut to uncommon species here at this season=2C such as waterfowl=2C hawks=2C=
owls=2C waxwings=2C shrikes=2C straggling warblers or sparrows=2C blackbir=
ds and finches other than goldfinches.
