For some reason=2C cats will kill star-nosed=0A=
moles and plenty of them but they won't eat them. I wonder why=2C there mus=
t be=0A=
a reason=2C maybe a scent gland.=0A=
 =0A=
I'm not sure why people think that keeping=0A=
cats in at night will cure the problem=2C maybe lessen it by 1/4. The true =
cure is=0A=
to not allow housecats to roam free=2C (same law as for dogs) they must be =
in a=0A=
pen=2C leash or under control=2C the same as any other pet. This will near =
totally=0A=
cure the problem.=0A=
 =0A=
Coyotes love the taste of cats=2C our DNR=0A=
found 3 cat collars in one coyote stomach. I think that if people really do=
 love=0A=
their cats=2C they would contain them so not to get run over or ate. I don'=
t=0A=
believe people think about them be eaten though.=0A=
 =0A=
Housecats are a problem in the rural=0A=
areas=2C the same as they are anywhere else. A roaming cat kills no matter =
where=0A=
it resides. I know of two different houses that have about 15 cats each=2C=
=0A=
lovely=2C just xxxxxxx lovely. The best way to get rid of mice is to trap t=
hem=2C=0A=
rats too. Cats will not tacke full grown rats=2C seen them run from them=2C=
 baby=0A=
rats maybe. Education and law is what is needed. It seems there is some sor=
t of=0A=
left over scare from the black plague to allow cats to roam and kill at wil=
l. =0A=
Be known that the cats just spread the plague further by hosting fleas.=0A=
 =0A=
It is past time to make it law to contain=0A=
your pets=2C all pets=2C no exceptions. Only then will this problem be solv=
ed and=0A=
not until.=0A=

Hi All=0A=
 =0A=
We sometimes get caught up with the estimated numbers quoted from EC or=0A=
others as being totally accurate for some reason=2C though always expressed=
 in an=0A=
estimate or within a certain range. I don=92t have to tell this group that=
=0A=
science is based on fact with those facts extrapolated to give us some idea=
. Cod=0A=
numbers=2C seal numbers=2C feral cat numbers etc. to make a comparison. Is=
 the=0A=
number of birds really that important other than it=92 a lot and getting wo=
rse=0A=
as free-roaming cats increase? Don=92t we think that if we lose 350 millio=
n or=0A=
100 or 70 million land birds/small animals to cats in Canada a year=2C it=
=92s too=0A=
many when we can avoid it? Do we always have to complain about collisions=
=2C=0A=
habitat destruction etc. to lessen the guilt we have about our pet cat?=0A=
 =0A=
This is a human issue of attitude and it is important that we become more=
=0A=
responsible for our cats as we have with dogs. Cats are doing what they are=
=0A=
built to hunt extremely effectively and we are contributing to aiding an=0A=
invasive species that has a direct impact on our natural wildlife. Relegat=
ing=0A=
our pet cats to the house doesn=92t mean a life in the closet=2C and from w=
hat I=0A=
understand from my friends=2C it develops a better =93pet experience=94 whe=
re they=0A=
are not killed=2C shot at=2C poisoned=2C scarred or lost. On the wildlife s=
ide=2C we=0A=
humans need to take some responsibility here and quit hiding behind the =2C=
 my cat=0A=
is =93too old=94=2C =93too fat=94=2C =93doesn=92t climb trees=94=2C is a =
=93bush=0A=
cat=94=2C (I=92ve heard that one) and =93never brings anything home=94 atti=
tude=0A=
that relieves them of the guilt they have.=0A=
 =0A=
If we talk to the trap and neuter people=2C which I have=2C they are=0A=
experiencing a huge growth of unwanted cats in NS=2C there are no resources=
 to=0A=
deal with it and a public attitude that pretty much encourages dumping them=
. =0A=
Burnside Park in Dartmouth=2C the TN people say=2C has 1000 feral cats at a=
 minimum=0A=
as the SPCA (located there) has no room so the people open the car door and=
=0A=
abandon them right there. They told me you could set a trap anywhere there =
and=0A=
catch animals daily.=0A=
 =0A=
I suppose some roaming cats may very well develop a taste for rodents=2C an=
d=0A=
I guess selective enough to not include=2C chipmunks=2C young hare=2C meado=
w voles=2C=0A=
Star-nosed Moles=2C amphibians or birds given the opportunity but we humans=
 seem=0A=
to believe that cats=2C in order to enjoy their lives=2C need to be outdoor=
s. I am=0A=
encouraged to see Vancouver take a stand.=0A=
 =0A=
ps...can someone tell me why keeping cats inside at night is an answer to=
=0A=
the problem or is that point so the cat doesn=92t get hurt as easily? =0A=
