The huge gathering of scaup in Bayport/First South has not occurred this ye=
ar. This is the first time that I can remember that there were not hundred=
s present, usually between 500-800. Last year numbers were lower than in p=
revious years. The largest group of scaup that I saw in the area recently =
was 20 greaters off Highliner Foods in Lunenburg. Of course we do not have=
the ice that was present during winters of the past 10-15 years. Also, I'=
ve not checked out Feltzen South to see if there are any there. I've notic=
ed a huge drop in the population of common eider in this area over the past=
few winters and also during the summer. Long-tailed duck numbers are also=
lower than normal. These are just my personal observations though.
