How much of the decline of boreal birds is from climate change and how is m=
uch from forest removal and/or fragmentation that favors Blue Jays, Crows, =
etc?

Hmm=E2=80=A6 hard to say and /I sure don=E2=80=99t have the answer.

However, my area immediately south of Yarmouth has a lot more forest cover =
than it did forty to sixty years ago. Oldfields returning to forest, old c=
uts growing in, and all that good stuff. Lots of crows and blue jays, too.=
Ravens were actually commoner than crows for a couple or five years, a co=
upla years back.

Re owls, barreds were the species we would see the most often, but it=E2=80=
=99s been a couple of years, now. The great horneds, on the other hand, ar=
e becoming increasingly commonplace. Have had two roosting around the hous=
e this spring.

Glad we don=E2=80=99t own a cat!

My mother had a Gray Jay visit her feeder last week in East Dalhousie. App=
arently the pair are still in the area. The whir of forest machinery cutt=
ing down the woods last night as we looked for Barred Owls (and found at le=
ast 3 individuals residing near Spectacle Lake) was extraordinary. How wil=
l Gray Jays nest and survive in the bits of habitat remaining?

uch from forest removal and/or fragmentation that favors Blue Jays, Crows, =
etc?

Lots of Ruffed Grouse this year. I keep looking for Spruce Grouse, but non=
e observed so far.

Donna

=E2=80=8EHi John,

I have been keeping track of Gray Jay, Spruce Grouse and Boreal Chickadee s=
ightings for a few years now. I spend a lot of time throughout most of the =
province and I find these species, along with a few other boreal birds hard=
to find SW of Lunenburg. I'm not sure where you're from in SW N.S. but I'm=
curious to know if there's always been a lack of these boreal=E2=80=8E spe=
cies there or have you noticed a decline over the years?

Thanks,

Chris

And down here in the Banana Belt, they are not noteworthy. Ditto for cardi=
nals.

Evening grosbeaks, Canada jays, and boreal chickadees, on the other hand, g=
enerate excitement.

This province isn=E2=80=99t as small as it seems!

In 24 hours, I doubled my Turkey Vulture count for Antigonish Co., with two=
soaring over Ohio yesterday around 5:30, and one gliding over my land (new=
 yard bird!) this afternoon.
