Some municipalities (District of Yarmouth) have strengthened their protecti=
on of riparian buffer zones. That=E2=80=99s a good first step, but they st=
ill get presented with faits accomplis, and their by-laws don=E2=80=99t hav=
e the same clout as provincial regulations.

I=E2=80=99d like to see building contractors made liable for riparian zone =
destruction, as well.

If there were sufficient political pressure, maybe we would see more change=
s, provincially.

Another issue is the limited capacity of the government to enforce, but the=
province does have more clout than municipalities.

t fishing.

James, I've seen declines in my brooks on my property, though have not chec=
ked this Spring. Water levels are so low here too, the lowest I've ever see=
n for this time of year. When there was a clear cut done on my road a few y=
ears ago the effect on the Branch LaHave was striking-- just in the water l=
evels with no silt washing into it as there is still a tree barrier. But th=
e watershed areas for the rivers have almost no protection in Nova Scotia. =
I've talked to Dept. of Environment about it, they can't do much when it's =
privately owned; there are no laws preventing people from basically doing a=
s they please on their own property.

First off I believe the state of trout around Lunenburg is not in the best =
of shape. Last year was the first time in my lifetime that I did not catch=
any brook trout at all. This year is shaping up more or less the same. I=
've visited most of my local haunts that always gave me fish early in the s=
eason without any luck and I've been out numerous times. All that I caught=
was a bass on my first outing. I've scratched Broad Cove Brook off of my =
list as officially dead of life. This brook from a recent visit was the lo=
west I've seen it for this time of the year. There was a six pack ring fro=
m beer left behind suggesting that any trout that might have been there mig=
ht already have been caught. There still should been some life signs of fis=
h. Traditionally every nook and cranny once had trout. A number of years =
ago, probably ten or so now they clear cut and siltated the brook. After t=
hat things steadily went downhill. The entire brook was siltated when I vi=
sited it on the weekend. This is the story with many of my traditional hau=
nts. No fish at all anymore. On the bright side I did see my first leopar=
d frog of the year there. This morning I heard my first black-throated gre=
en warbler calling outside of my home in LaHave. It only vocalized the onc=
e though.
