This morning, Dr Cindy Staicer reported seeing an American marten while =
conducting a bird survey near North Cranberry Lake in Kejimkujik =
National Park. She actually observed either two individuals or the =
same one twice at two different sites, but both located in the same =
area, a mature hemlock-dominated stand. Marten observations in Keji =
remain relatively rare.
=20
It=E2=80=99s nice to know that some are surviving in the remnant =
forests. (I attempted to survey this site last week but high winds =
prevented a survey, and I was indebted to Cindy for volunteering to take =
it on today. I will likely conduct the 2nd bird survey on this site. =
We conduct two songbird surveys annually. Cindy=E2=80=99s observations =
most certainly prompt me to keep my eyes open for marten!) I wonder how =
its presence impacts songbirds... It=E2=80=99s often a very =
=E2=80=98quiet site=E2=80=99 for forest songbirds. Maybe that is best.

Subject: [NatureNS] Pine Marten in Point Pleasant Park, Halifax

This morning while walking to work I chatted with a fellow who told me =
that two weeks ago he saw a Pine Marten in Point Pleasant Park. It was =
up in a tree hunting squirrels. He obviously spends a lot of time in =
the woods, and was very familiar with the various species in that =
family.=20
=20
He told me that he reported to the "natural resources folks" and they =
said that they "knew that they had a pair of Martens in the Park".=20
