Hi John,
I was surprised by the nuthatches too, although maybe I should not have bee=
n - I saw a few a week ago that I took for residents, and Mark Dennis saw o=
ne at sea on Wednesday. It did feel more like September than August, though=
, to have those birds overhead yesterday morning.
The top predator has really been hitting it hard recently. There has been a=
herring fleet just off St Mary's Bay for several weeks, and I know there h=
as been one closer to Grand Manan too. Too many are competing for the same =
resource.
I follow your migration notes with the greatest of interest, especially for=
comparison with Brier.
All the best,
Eric

Wow, really interesting observations Eric!
Your notes about the nuthatches provide a nice insight on early August migr=
ation.
Your sighting of the top predator is also very apropos, given the WWF-Canad=
a report this week which indicates the Bay of Fundy herring fishery is in t=
rouble and that fisheries managers are not leaving enough fish in the water=
to meet the needs of whales and seabirds.
Thank you,
John

Subject: [NatureNS] Red-breasted Nuthatches, Brier Island
This morning just after dawn I counted 15 Red-breasted Nuthatches in flight=
over Northern Point, Brier Island. More were in the trees nearby, and late=
r I found more scattered about on the island. Arriving spring and fall migr=
ants frequently tower over the Point before moving off to the NE or dispers=
ing on the island.
This is quite an early record (although not quite the earliest) for this ir=
ruptive sp?ecies on Brier Island. It is often the first of the fall migrant=
s.
