Back in =E2=80=9983, I was involved in a N.s. Dept. of Fisheries stream sur=
vey in Queens County. At some point during the summer, we were boating acr=
oss the headpond below Rossignol, in order

to check out Kempton Brook. A little dark bird swimming on the pond took o=
ff as we approached. I tentatively reported it to Phyllis Dobson as a Wils=
on=E2=80=99s.

Later on the same day, as we were having lunch well upstream (What brook? =
No water, by that point!) we got visited by a very tame pine grosbeak.

There=E2=80=99s another bird we no longer see very often=E2=80=A6

Thanks to Helene and Sue Abbot for informative replies. It=E2=80=99s fasci=
nating that petrels have been turning up for the past few weeks. Some of t=
hem must evidently go astray even without big winds to push them. The Milf=
ord House occurrence was long prior to Hurricane Mathew. According to your=
observations, Helene, it sounds like it is unlikely that this little fello=
w survived, since it was released over the lake during the day. They talke=
d of driving it to the Bay of Fundy, but it was pretty hectic at Milford Ho=
use on that day.

They often get disoriented in high winds and land on shore. They have zero =
chance odf getting back to the water unless you physically bring them to th=
e ocean and toss them in the air over the water. You can toss them over lan=
d 100 times and they will just flutter to the ground. I always release them=
at dusk as they are nocturnal and also prone to gull predation if you let =
them go in the daylight.

There's nothing you can feed them in captivity and it's best to handle them=
with gloved hands as even hand oils can interrupt their very sensitive wat=
erproofing. We've been getting them off and on the past 3 weeks.

rote:

Val and Charlie, who manage Milford House, found a Leach=E2=80=99s Storm Pe=
trel under one of their cabin steps last Wednesday morning (Oct 5th), long =
before this tropical storm reached us. Does anyone know of petrels occasio=
nally hitting windows on some misguided inland forays? Theories welcome. =

It appears to have been a Leach=E2=80=99s and not a Wilson=E2=80=99s, as th=
e webs of the feet are black in one of Charlie=E2=80=99s photos. (No pictu=
re of the tail shape.) Val has forwarded me the photos if someone wants th=
em sent along for more definitive ID.

I wonder how easily it might find its way back to the ocean?

Donna Crossland

(Sadly, Milford House will be close its doors after tonight once again unti=
l spring. It=E2=80=99s such a wonderful place to spend some time in nature=
!)

Subject: YOU ARENT GOING TO BELIEVE THIS

You will never guess in a million years what Charlie found under the doorst=
ep this morning....a bird had hit the window before daylight, when he went =
out with the dog shortly after he saw something scurry under the step. Late=
r that morning, he looked under and pulled out a STORM PETREL!!!!!!!!!! Not=
 sure if it was a Wilson's or a Leach's..

And yes we have pictures.....which I will send along when I get them downlo=
aded.

Now what would a storm petrel be doing in South Milford???? 20 miles from t=
he salt water?? I could see it if it was after the hurricane....but thats n=
ot even here yet..
