I just want to clarify that although it is true that Leach's storm =
petrels come and go from their nest burrows after dusk to avoid being =
attacked while flying across land and to avoid alerting possible =
predators to their burrow entrance, once at sea, they are very active =
throughout the day feeding. Their night behaviour at sea is largely =
unknown. =20
It isn't just wind that can push them inshore. Fog can greatly confuse =
storm petrels (and other birds such as shearwaters), as can bright =
lights.

Thanks to Helene and Sue Abbot for informative replies. It=E2=80=99s =
fascinating that petrels have been turning up for the past few weeks. =
Some of them must evidently go astray even without big winds to push =
them. The Milford House occurrence was long prior to Hurricane Mathew. =
According to your observations, Helene, it sounds like it is unlikely =
that this little fellow survived, since it was released over the lake =
during the day. They talked of driving it to the Bay of Fundy, but it =
was pretty hectic at Milford House on that day. =20

They often get disoriented in high winds and land on shore. They have =
zero chance odf getting back to the water unless you physically bring =
them to the ocean and toss them in the air over the water. You can toss =
them over land 100 times and they will just flutter to the ground. I =
always release them at dusk as they are nocturnal and also prone to gull =
predation if you let them go in the daylight.=20
=20
There's nothing you can feed them in captivity and it's best to handle =
them with gloved hands as even hand oils can interrupt their very =
sensitive waterproofing. We've been getting them off and on the past 3 =
weeks.=20

You will never guess in a million years what Charlie found under the =
doorstep this morning....a bird had hit the window before daylight, when =
he went out with the dog shortly after he saw something scurry under the =
step. Later that morning, he looked under and pulled out a STORM =
PETREL!!!!!!!!!! Not sure if it was a Wilson's or a Leach's..
And yes we have pictures.....which I will send along when I get them =

Now what would a storm petrel be doing in South Milford???? 20 miles =
from the salt water?? I could see it if it was after the =
hurricane....but thats not even here yet..
