The regular monthly meeting of the Blomidon Naturalists Society will take p=
lace Monday, October 17th at 7:30 PM in Room BAC241 of Beveridge Arts Centr=
e, Acadia University, Wolfville.

The main presentation will be:

Nova Scotia Forests of the Anthropocene: More Youthful and Slender; Winners=
and Losers; Sunnier Soils Ahead by Donna Crossland

Donna Crossland grew up in the rural community of East Dalhousie, Kings Co.=
and presently resides in Tupperville, Annapolis Co. She is currently emplo=
yed at Kejimkujik National Park and Historic Site as a Resource Management =
Officer. She has been a member of the BNS for about 30 years. Donna is a fo=
rest ecologist with a passionate interest in the proper management of our A=
cadian forest. She has researched historical forest composition, disturbanc=
e regimes, including fire history, and white pine regeneration. In addition=
, she has contributed to vegetation management planning at both Prince Edwa=
rd Island and Kouchibouguac National Parks. She completed a Master of Scien=
ce in Forestry at the University of New Brunswick sparked by concerns over =
the natural role of fire in the Acadian forest and its over-use as a justif=
ication for clearcutting (i.e. emulating supposedly =91natural fire regimes=
=92 through clearcutting). Her research concluded that natural fires were r=
are in the Acadian forest, but repeated European-caused fires altered vast =
tracts of Nova Scotia=92s forests beginning ~1790.

The public is welcome.
