Title: Listening in on the Deep: The Story that Whale Sounds can Tell
Abstract While more than twenty different species of cetaceans - whales, do=
lphins and porpoises occur off Nova Scotia, relatively little is known abou=
t when, where and how whales use most of our waters. Passive acoustic monit=
oring(listening) for under-water sounds offers an effective
way to study and monitor marine mammal occurrence. This talk will eavesdrop=
on whales off NS - the sounds they make, an overview of current technologi=
es used to record their calls will be provided, and results from Dr. Moors-=
Murphy's ongoing acoustic work will be discussed.
Dr. Moors-Murphy's primary research focus is passive acoustic monitoring of=
cetaceans and their habitat. More specifically, she aims to increase our u=
nderstanding of when and how cetaceans are using different areas of the Sco=
tian Shelf by monitoring their underwater vocalizations over various spatia=
l and temporal scales.
All are welcome but seating is limited so "first come first served"
