Regarding Donna=92s comment about shallow snow cover and hunting ease =
for Bernard=92s and other barred owls =97 the snow depth is a =
several-edged sword for the small mammals and their predators =97 deeper =
snow provides a nice insulative blanket, but makes hunting more =
difficult for the avian predators =97 a few years ago we had deep spring =
snow and few barred owls laid eggs, even though later in spring there =
might have been lots of prey to be had after the snow melted.  Nature is =
