Well folks - I don't like fishing in a snow storm!=20

Been there - done that! so I will talk about Mayflowers!

The best scent I ever experienced was about May 10 a few

years ago - maybe many! I was at Peskawa Lake and needed

to come down Peskawesk Lake to get to the end during the day.

So I left before daylight and got to the Beaverskin - Peskawesk portage

just as sun was breaking the horizon. There was no wind either.

The scent of Mayflowers on the Portage was like I never experienced =
before

or after. Just beautiful. A pair of Horned Owls escorted me over the =
Portage.

Every time something banged on the canoe they hooted! I guess they were

not familiar with canoes being portaged!

Latter at a Loon Count - I saw many Indian Pipe ( Monotropa uniflora ) =
on the Portage.

I don't know if the two have some sort of a relationship or if it was by =
chance.

A wonderful morning! Good memories!

Enjoy the spring

Paul

For May flowers, it pretty well depends on the location of the walk and =
how spring greets us this year. Aiming for mid-April is generally =
reasonable, but perhaps not this year. Keep checking the sunniest and =
warmest locations for them. I used to pick some that were budding and =
bring them inside to bloom. That may be the surest way to have people =
experience their amazing scent on the nature walk if it takes place in =
the next week or so.

Generally we can count on May flowers blooming in April on mainland NS, =
and some years the only way to actually find them in bloom during the =
month of May is to look for them in the most cool and shaded spots, like =
under hemlocks where I grew up in East Dalhousie. Since they are often =
past blooming time by the time May rolls around in NS, I used to lean =
towards using the other common name: trailing arbutus (lovely). When I =
worked in NB, May flowers were more easily found in May because of the =
more northern latitude.

Several years ago, I recall spring weather that had us working in =
T-shirts and testing fire pumps in April, with temperatures feeling like =
a late June day. Last spring was so cold on some days that I began to =
grow concerned for the swallows and least flycatchers who were looking =
for winged insects to fill their bellies. None were to be had. I had =
no need for fly repellant as it was too cold for even the robust black =
fly to zero in on me during early morning surveys. I am hoping this =
spring is more pleasant, but who knows. It's certainly a cold start to =
fishing season.

May depend on where in the province folks happen to be.

Down here in the Banana Belt, we haven't heard any peepers yet, but the =
most recent weather gave us a miss. =20

Forgot to report the appearance of a coltsfoot near Yarmouth High about =
a week ago.

A friend of mine is planning a walk, next month, hoping to smell =
mayflowers.

Given the current temperatures, would anybody hazard a guess on when we =
can expect first flowers?

Thanks,

Burkhard
