Veerys (-ies?) were a regular summer resident on Wyman Road, south of
Yarmouth, until a couple or three years ago. Not sure what happened.
Other news, at a get-together up in Lake Annis (near the Digby County line)
on Sunday, a grackle pursued a largish accipiter across our clearing about a
hundred feet from us. Dark top, rufous breast, size difference . I conclude
it was a Cooper's.
The same day, one of the folks noticed a small snake heading towards a
crevice in the cottage foundation. I delayed its disappearance in time to
identify it as a ring-necked snake.
Back in the '60's, I was an avid pursuer of snakes, and ringnecks were
extremely unusual. I pursue a lot less now, and see ringnecks about as
frequently. Makes me suspect they are becoming more abundant.
