Hi All,
Through emails forwarded by Jim Wolford to this list a year or more ago =
from Just Us coffee, a commitment was made by that group to investigate =
having at least one blend of Just Us coffee to be bird friendly =
certified. I have checked and asked regularly at their store in Grand =
Pre whenever I=E2=80=99m passing through the area about if and when they =
expect to have a Smithsonian Bird Friendly certified blend. I never =
received any response that indicated that they are moving forward on =
this initiative.
I would prefer to buy from local businesses. I do remember, however, an =
incident a number of years ago when Tim Horton=E2=80=99s and other =
brands said their coffees were grown by small farmers under fair trade =
conditions but not certified as such. The response of certified fair =
trade coffee brewers was that if it=E2=80=99s not certified then it is =
not fair trade. I would say the same today, if it=E2=80=99s not =
certified, then it is not bird friendly.
Perhaps a small group of people from the Bird Society could formally =
meet with Just Us and ask why they have not developed a certified bird =
friendly blend and if there is anything we could do to help them. I =
would volunteer to be one such person if asked.
There are also a few new coffee brewers becoming established in Nova =
Scotia. For example, one in southwestern Nova Scotia is Sissiboo Coffee =
Roaster which has certified fair trade and organic blends. Perhaps this =
Bird Society working group could present the benefits of bird friendly =
certified coffee to these new businesses.

hi folks,=20
=20
Buying it locally would be ideal, but it is not yet sold in the =
Annapolis Valley, so I've been having it shipped directly from Birds and =
Beans. It usually arrives in 2-4 days. I costed it out and ordering 5 lb =
bags makes the total cost (coffee + tax + shipping) about the same as =
ordering fair trade/organic locally. With a second person adding to the =
order, (so splitting the shipping), it works out to be cheaper.
=20
Birds and Beans also has 'Coffee Clubs': if you have a group of people =
locally that make a periodic bulk order the costs rapidly decrease. =
Something like this might work with the Nova Scotia Bird Society if =
orders were taken and coffee was distributed at monthly meetings.=20
=20
That said, cost is not the only important factor; there's value in =
supporting local businesses that have pioneered fair trade/organic (but =
not Smithsonian 'Bird Friendly' certified) coffee in our region (e.g. =
Just Us) which is so much better for birds/wildlife/people than other =
brands of coffee without those certifications...

That is Birds & Beans coffee, the only certified Bird-Friendly coffee =
made in Canada. It can be bought at Earth Organic on Quinpool Road, =
Halifax. I believe it is the only place in NS that carries the coffee.=20
=20
They have light, medium and dark blends in ground and whole bean bags =
though stock is minimal and you might not get your preferred choice. It =
is not a big seller but they continue to carry it.

I find it to be excellent coffee and you can get a 10% discount with =
your NS Bird Society membership card.

About a year ago a Halifax retailer started to sell bird friendly =
coffee. I'm curious if bird friendly coffee caught on in any other =
communities in the province. I'm not sure if the Halifax store had =
success or not. I bought two bags back when it was first available. =20
