Hi Donna and others,
Thanks for your interest in this. I have never met you and I think we o=
ften disagree which means we have that in common also.
If you are in the Kentville area sometime I would be delighted to show =
you why I want to keep this out of the hands of future developers; good Mor=
ristown loam and darn good tree growth in areas not limited by shallow bedr=
ock. And interesting cover in the less prosperous areas dominated by site l=
imitations.
And also show you the remnants of Rhamnus frangula (called something el=
se now) thickets which just flopped over and died. I have followed the fort=
unes of this plant for 59 years; sparse to absent as long as most chopping =
or pastures carried livestock. But it quickly spread after absence of teet=
h and scythe gave it a break. Curiously deer do not browse it. And apparent=
ly not rabbits (aka snowshoe hare).
Drawing on memory, I think one of the beetles which I kept was new to A=
tlantic Canada. Every place is special if you look a bit. e.g.My old-growth=
compost pile at 16 Overlook Rd. yielded a second collection for North Amer=
ica.
And to anyone nearby, you are always welcome to walk up there; don't dr=
ive up or block the entrance. End of Schofield Road; sign says 'no horses n=
o vehicles DHW'
Last year I partly cleared a former small hayfield which had become ing=
rown by trees, leading to a depletion of insect and plant diversity. There =
has been some recovery already.

It=E2=80=99s timely to read this exchange regarding conservation easement=
s and other solutions to ensure that private woodlots continue to house bio=
diversity values and ecosystem services while perhaps continuing to provide=
a modest income, or otherwise remain a working woodlot. The issue of wood=
lot liquidation (or otherwise flattening woodlots) is a huge one that needs=
to be addressed quickly. Woodlots that were carefully managed for generat=
ions are now falling to clearcutting practices for a variety of reasons by =
the next generation. As we rapidly run out of Crown wood, DNR and the mill=
s will count on getting wood from private land holdings (though presently p=

o we ensure that the last bits of mature forest in the province are managed=
sustainably for a variety of purposes other than the single-minded interes=
ts of =E2=80=98fiber production=E2=80=99?
I=E2=80=99ve been whispering in the ears of some key people, hoping that =
someone, or some organizations who have earned public trust, will provide s=
ome useful and very practical legal advice on conservation easements very s=
oon. Small woodlot owners, many of whom are now seniors, require the info=
rmation now, rather than later. The obvious organizations we might have tur=
ned to, such as DNR, have lost public trust, and it would be best to obtain=
solid advice on conservation easements from elsewhere, from group(s) that =
will not directly profit from this/who are not in conflict of interest.
For future generations, we need to preserve the last tiny bits of the old=
growth and intact wilderness, with sugar maples, yellow birch, red spruce,=
hemlock, and other living components of our forests. I am looking into a =
conservation easement for my tiny woodlot. I like the idea of providing so=
me kind of lasting legacy in my will, while not shutting out the possibilit=
y of sensible, informed harvesting here and there in future generations. I=
=E2=80=99d like to stipulate the maintenance of a shaded forest floor (prot=

yet unnamed, as part of the sustainable solution), but I=E2=80=99ve got so=
me homework to do first. We=E2=80=99ll have to share what we find out this=

Good points about preserving working woodland. I have the impression tha=
t working farmland is better protected, but maybe that is a matter of local=
zoning?
I was once told about the fate of a mature sugar maple woodlot in the har=
dwood hills of Pictou County. It had been carefully managed for maple syru=
p production for generations. When Grandpa died, none of the family could =
take it on. They all agreed that it should only be sold to someone who pla=
nned to continue the operation. They found a buyer who promised to do so. =
The next year, he clearcut the acreage and sold 200 year old sugar maples =
for firewood. The granddaughter who told me this was alternately enraged, =
and teary-eyed, at the folly of it.
Aldo Leopold's style may not be to your taste, Dave, but he was an early =
voice in proposing conservation. Have you ever read any of the essays of W=
endell Berry? I'd recommend his earlier collections, beginning with The Un=
settling of America (1977) and The Gift of Good Land (1981). The Library =
at Acadia has some of his books.

Hi John & All,
I suspect conservation, and nature worship, rank high in the minds =
of most private woodlot owners.
I was fully disgusted with NS Nature Trust when they sniffed 'We do=
n't protect that kind of woodland', when I made inquiries about protecting =
my woodlot permanently from residential/commercial development.
If you aim to protect 12% of an area then 78% is unprotected and wh=

I never did read the second half of A Sand County Almanac, land eth=

of managing all landscapes.

GIFTS TO A FUTURE WORLD: CONVERSATIONS WITH WOODLAND OWNERS IN NOVA S=
COTIA
By Andrew W. Kekacs
Abstract:
Private, non-industrial woodland owners provide more than half of the=
timber used by Nova Scotia=E2=80=99s forest products industry. Research, h=
owever, suggests many of these owners do not consider income from timber sa=
les to be their primary reason for owning woodland. This study aimed to rea=
ch a holistic understanding of their attitudes and motivations using walkin=
g interviews on the owners=E2=80=99 woodlands and a grounded theory approac=
h to analysis, in which explanations of the phenomena under study are induc=
ed from the data rather than being based on responses to survey questions o=
r derived from a priori hypotheses. Forest landowners interviewed for this =
research were most concerned with the conservation =E2=80=93 and ultimately=
the conveyance =E2=80=93 of values that provide them with no immediate eco=
nomic returns. The high value placed on these =E2=80=9Cgifts to a future wo=
rld=E2=80=9D offers a new way to think about the design of programs meant t=
o encourage active management of private forestland.
