Hi all

=20

The first fall presentation of the Pictou Co Naturalists Club will be =
Tues Sept 5 at 6:30 pm at the community room of the New Glasgow library =
182 Dalhousie St. As part of the Libraries 150 project, the book THE =
BIRDS OF NOVA SCOTIA by Robie W Tufts, has been selected for the =
influence it has had in the province. The presentation, Robie W. Tufts, =
His Life and Legacy will be by Mark Elderkin, the species at risk =
biologist for the province.

=20

Robie Tufts was drawn to the outdoors as a boy and although he started =
in a career in finance, he was lured back to the outdoors where he spent =
28 years as Chief Federal Migratory Bird Officer. He travelled =
constantly keeping lots of notes and preaching the gospel of =
conservation, to individuals, schools and groups. When the NS Bird =
Society was formed in 1955, he became the first president. With his =
lifetime notes on nature supplemented by notes entrusted by others he =
wrote THE BIRDS OF NOVA SCOTIA which was first published in 1961.=20

=20

While living in Wolfville, many young lads were drawn to Robie and some =
became ornithologists at the top of their profession. One youngster =
influenced by Dr Tufts was our presenter Mark Elderkin now our =
provincial Species at Risk Biologist. Tufts was in his late 70=E2=80=99s =
when he befriended Mark in 1964, who then was just eight years old. For =
the next 18 years, until Tuft=E2=80=99s death in 1982 at the age of =
ninety-eight, they remained close friends. Mark will share some of his =
memories about Robie=E2=80=99s life, the man, the character, author, =
conservationist=E2=80=8B, naturalist and together, we will celebrate the =
last of a breed of ornithologists in Nova Scotia that set the stage for =
bird conservation in Canada today. Tonight's presentation is sponsored =
by the Libraries 150 project : 150 Books of Influence: a booklist to =
commemorate Nova Scotia's literary heritage, and a grant by the NS =
Department of Communities, Culture & Heritage.

=20

Robie Tufts was a colourful individual and Mark is sure to have many =
great stories to tell about his life and accomplishments. All are =
welcome to attend so reserve the date and come on out and be sure to =
bring a friend.=20
