Well Nancy I often see Waxwings flycatching from dead trees.

Especially on flooded areas!

Enjoy the nice fall days.

Yes I think you may be right. They were too far away for a good 10xbino look but I thought the underside may have had a brown-yellow type hue although it could have been the lighting. Didn't know waxwings did "flycatching" so I had ruled them out. Thanks for your input.

Hi Nancy,

I will say they were Cedar Waxwings, but the photo is no help on that.

Yesterday I saw 3-6 birds in a large dead tree in a partially regrown cutover. They were flycatching and returning to their perch frequently so it was hard to tell exactly how many there were. Size and behaviour (hunting from a prominent perch in a clearing) plus the upright flycatcher stance and sloped head profile suggested Olive Sided Flycatchers to me, possible immature. I did notice a white patch flash on one plus a relatively short squared off tail. Here is a hazy photo if it is any help:
I have a friend keeping track of these birds as a species at risk so would like to report them if others feel I have the right ID.
