Last Wednesday morning, I heard some crows making calls of concern, behind
our place on Wyman Road, south of Yarmouth. High above them was a large
buteo which seemed to want to hover intermittently before proceeding on.
Too high up to see a colour pattern, but much of the underside was light, so
it wasn't an eagle. Rough-leg?

The following day, about 1:30, we were driving down the Ellis Road, about
300 meters from where it joined the Wyman Road when a really big raptor
rose up and gave us a fair look. It certainly was not one of the regular
turkey vultures. Looked uniformly dark below, with no indication of light
wing linings. Head and bill looked smaller than I would expect for a bald,
and the patchy sunlight seemed to reflect a little goldenly off it at
certain angles. Couldn't have been, I know, but I'm saying it was a
hypothetical golden.

Saw an adult bald in the same neighbourhood the following day, and have seen
young balds in the neighbourhood, other winters.

Love that slaughterhouse!
