Hi Dave & All,
Perhaps a first step would be to enforce a lights-out policy or=20
drawn blinds at night on all tall buildings. And equally important a=20
substantially reduced speed on motor vehicles.
When I first retired 27 years ago I frequently walked along a nearby=
=20
road (Brooklyn St.) with low traffic. You could almost count on finding=20
fresh roadkill; Frogs, Painted Turtles, Snakes, Raccoon and birds=20
especially young birds. Years before that when we had a cottage at=20
Sunken Lake the low traffic road around the lake was typically littered=20
with Dragon Flies and Snakes in season; potholes enforced low speed so=20
birds were spared there.
I used to walk a great deal but over time began to dread visiting a=20
favorite haunt for fear of finding a residential development, a gravel=20
pit or some impromptu dump. Urban sprawl has not been great for wild=20
animals; birds, insects or beasts.
Farmers here have to compete with industrial scale farming=20
elsewhere; fields which continue beyond the horizon. And our forest=20
products must compete with low cost alternatives. They can not afford to=20
trample hay or grain or do a tree nest survey before proceeding.
I have always considered it a right to walk on farmland provided I=20
kept to roads or paths and walk through woodland provided I did not=20
inflict damage. But to keep such rights in balance one must avoid=20
bringing grief to the landowners or his agents; unless some serious=20
crime is discovered.
The concept that all things should be viewed in a holistic manner is=
=20
not new as in Matthew 7:5 "first take the plank out of your own eye, and=20
then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."
     End of sermon.
Yt, DW, Kentville
