Subject: [NS-RBA] Nova Scotia Bird Society Meeting - Thursday March 22, 2018
- 7:30PM

Join us this Thursday evening, March 22, 2018 at 7:30 PM for an update on
the results thus far of the Ipswich Sparrow Project that was started last
summer. Project lead and researcher, Sydney Bliss will provide us with the
latest and what we can do to help!

Place: Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History, 1747 Summer Street, Halifax,
NS in the Lower Auditorium

Ipswich Sparrows breed almost exclusively on Sable Island, NS. In the fall,
they migrate to the NS mainland, then to their wintering grounds in the
eastern USA. They winter anywhere from Massachusetts to Georgia, but are
found in the highest densities in New Jersey and Virginia. In the spring,
they return to Sable Island.

To better understand these birds, researchers at Acadia and Dalhousie
Universities have begun a long-term demographic study. 263 sparrows have
been banded on Sable Island with unique combinations of coloured bands,
which allow individual birds to be identified. From the proportion of birds
that are seen again (or "re-sighted"), we can estimate how many survive at
each stage of their migration. The results of this study will help us better
understand the structure of the Ipswich Sparrow population.

Our meetings are open to the public at no charge and refreshments are
available during and after the talk.
