Kevin Lantz and I did my Lapland/Laconia Owl Monitoring Route on Apr. 13. =
It was a phenomenal night and one of the best that I've done. The conditio=
ns started out with it being 25 % overcast and the quietest conditions I've=
ever had on a night out the whole way through. The downside was that it r=
ained on the last three stops. It was not supposed to start until 02:00 or=
03:00, but the system came in early. Owls are not supposed to fly in the =
rain I'm told or when a system comes in they are usually quiet, but this wa=
s not the case in the last two out of three stops. So you are probably won=
dering how things went by now. Well it was the best night I've ever had on=
this route. My top was 18 owls the first time that I ran the route. Kevi=
n and I had 19 owls. On a few routes we thought there were three owls pres=
ent, but did not record three as we assumed that the owls were moving aroun=
d, but there very well could have been more than the 19 that we could confi=
rm. So we had owls on eight out of 10 stops, 17 barred owls, one northern =
saw-whet (very vocal) and one great horned owl that was doing an alarm call=
. In addition we had spring peepers and wood frogs at most stops and coyot=
es howling at one stop. Seven common loons were also calling.
